The Let’s Get Active (LGA) Committee of NS Trails was created to encourage human powered activities such as walking, hiking, cycling, XC skiing, snow shoeing as well as canoeing and kayaking on our beautiful trails and waterways. All activities are open to the public; children must be accompanied by parents as well as a waiver must be signed to participate.
Thanks to the financial assistance of our friends from Mountain Equipment Co-op, we are delighted to offer prizes of a maximum of $150 per event. Why not serve as an Event Coordinator and plan your own human powered activity on a trail or waterway in Nova Scotia?
Hike Nova Scotia Wraps up Successful Fall and Winter Guided Hike Series
Wondering how your organization can use the LGA fund? Look no further than Hike Nova Scotia. They were able to use the LGA to run two very successful guided hiking series.
Hike NS and 16 host organizations across NS partnered to offer the 35 hikes with an estimated 1000 participants between Sept. 12 and Nov. 14 in their Fall Guided Hike Series. Not to be outdone by their fall participation, in the new year they partnered with 28 host organizations across NS to offer the Winter Guided Snowshoe Hike Series and are on track to have close to 1500 participants!
The purpose of the event series was to: 1) get more people in NS hiking; 2) highlight local trails and increase their use; and 3) promote Hike NS, local trail groups and other partnering organizations.
How Hike NS put the Let's Get Active Fund to use:
The purpose of the Let's Get Active Fund monies was to help buy gear to give away as our "trail prizes" for each hike. We originally estimated that there would be 60 hikes between the two series, so applied for funds for each hike at $16 per hike for a total of $960. Since we had more hikes than expected, we were able to stretch our budget and used additional Hike NS monies to purchase prizes. The $960 of LGA monies bought most of the 87 prizes needed (with the remaining prizes provide through Hike NS in the form of Hike NS T-shirts and purchased prizes). Purchased prizes included trail books (purchased in the fall to get a discount), compasses and first aid kits. Attached are the receipts for the trail books, compasses and first aid kits purchased.
